Did the decedent leave any descendants?

Children, grandchildren, and so on. Adopted children count.

Are all of the decedent’s descendants also descendants of the surviving spouse?

“No” if the decedent had a child from another relationship.

Does the surviving spouse have any descendants who are not the decedent’s?

For example, the spouse’s child from a prior marriage.

Is either of the decedent’s parents living?

Are there surviving siblings, or descendants of deceased siblings?

Half-siblings count.

Are there surviving grandparents, aunts, uncles, or cousins on either side?

Was the decedent previously married to someone who died, and did that person leave relatives?

Florida looks to the kindred of the last deceased spouse before the estate escheats.
