Going Deep on Claude Skills

Posted on Jun 28, 2026 by David Shulman

Most “how I use AI” videos are some guy telling you to 10x your firm. This isn’t that.

I had Episode 3 planned for a month, a slick walkthrough of my client intake with a made-up family and a fake estate. I hated it. So I scrapped it and made this instead: how I actually build and use Claude “skills” to run the day-to-day of my practice, and why I’m constantly rebuilding them.

A skill isn’t a saved prompt, and it isn’t a macro. It’s me describing a boring, repeatable task in plain English, and Claude turning that into something it can run against my real Clio, my real files, my real calendar. I don’t write any code.

The episode walks through the ones I actually use:

  • Entering and cleaning up my billable time in Clio
  • Opening a new client file straight through to a signed engagement letter
  • Sending certified mail without touching an envelope
  • Building a pleading and driving the court’s e-filing portal, which stops before it ever hits Submit
  • The skill that edits, captions, and posts this video every week

A lawyer is still responsible for reviewing every word of it. That part doesn’t change.
